Seasoning Your Slik Vik Griddle
Proper care of your Slik Vik Griddle will insure a lifetime of successful outdoor cooking. Before using the griddle be sure to season it well. It is also important to clean the griddle properly. There are two ways to season your Slik Vik Griddle: the oven method; and the open fire method. Instructions are provide below for both methods.
Seasoning Your Slik Vik Griddle™: The Oven Way
Wash your griddle with warm soapy water and wipe completely. With a thin layer of lard or olive oil, coat cast iron completely. Wipe off excess oil. Heat oven to 350 degrees . Place some aluminum foil in the bottom of oven to catch oil drippings. Oven will smoke considerably during seasoning. Please have proper ventilation in immediate area. Place upside down and leave in oven for one hour. (If seasoning Turkey Fryer Griddle, make sure drip hole is at lowest point in oven.) Shut off oven and let griddle cool completely. Before cooking your first meal, we highly recommend cooking 1 to 2 lbs of bacon or salt pork a few times to complete the seasoning process. Once you have completed this process, enjoy your Slik Vik Griddle product.
Seasoning Your Slik Vik Griddle™: The Open Fire Way
***WARNING: EXTREME CAUTION IS ADVISED***
Prior to starting fire, place griddle on either a grate, bricks or stones so that it is elevated several inches above fire pit. The griddle must be as level as possible to ensure the melted lard does not flow over the edge and into the fire, causing a flare-up which will prevent proper seasoning, and cause bodily injury. There needs to be enough room under griddle to be able to feed fire during seasoning process. Never try to move griddle once lard has melted. Prepare your campfire with a lot of wood to make a hot bed of coals. The fire pit should be at least 20 feet from anything that you want to keep. It is not recommended to season griddle while on a Slik Vik Griddle™ Tripod. First coat the entire griddle with a thin coat of lard. Fill the griddle with lard until the lard is halfway up the sides of it. Carefully place griddle over prepared fire pit, until it ignites. This should take between 40 to 100 minutes. There will be a large hot flame with heavy black smoke when the lard ignites. Please keep children away during this process. Flames will last approximately 5-10 minutes. Once the flame goes out, brush out debris. It is recommended to cook some bacon first on griddle to season even more. Once you have completed this process, enjoy your Slik Vik Griddle product.
